Particle board core, also known as Okal, is a type of wood core made from planted tree trunks such as eucalyptus, rubber, acacia... that are put into a machine to crush into chips. Then the finished wood chips are mixed with glue and pressed under heat to produce wooden planks with different standard thicknesses. Particle board can then be covered with decorative surfaces such as Melamine, Veneer, Acrylic... to be made into interior and exterior products.
1. What is Particle Board
2. Characteristics of Particle Board
- Advantages of Particle board
The characteristics of Particle board core is light, easy to construct, high durability, large surface size, cheap price, less labor-intensive production, so it is often used in interior decoration in general as well production of furniture for household in particular.
Specially, the particle board core has been treated with high technology, comparing with regular natural wood board on termites and warping, it shall be more minimized when used.
- Disadvantage of particle board
particle board core has low hardness, so it is easily affected by strong impacts if there is no surface layer covering it.
However, because it is formed from chopped chipboard, its flexibility is lower than some industrial wood cores made from fine wood pulp such as MDF and HDF.
3. Dimension and standard thickness.
The standard dimension of each particle board is 1220mm × 2440 mm. The thickness of the boards is also perse to meet many different design and use purposes.
With a wide surface size and a variety of thicknesses, particleboard is capable of meeting many different design styles.
4. Kinds of particle board core
Standard chipboard
Non-moisture resistant core ise particleboard core which is manufactured based on normal standards. They are not able for moisture resistance. So they are easily damaged if used in wet environments.
Moisture-resistant chipboard
Moisture resistant core, also known as moisture resistant green core, is the particle board core that uses particleboard mixed with additives to increase bonding strength and reduce water absorption, increase force-resistance capacity and especially good anti-swelling.
In a test when soaking both moisture-proof plywood and moisture-proof particleboard in water for 24 hours, the results showed that the swelling of the particleboard core was more limited than its plywood core.
5.Application in furniture production
After covering surface decoration layers such as Melamine, Laminate, Acrylic, Veneer..., particle board has many applications.
With non-moisture resistant particle board, it should mainly be used in internal furniture that are dry, wetless, and rarely exposed to water, such as office desks and chairs, wardrobes, beds, and decorative shelves…
With moisture resistant core, the application possibilities are more perse, can be used for Lavabo cabinets, bathroom doors, kitchen cabinets, wall cabinets...
Currently, Particle boards on the market are quite perse in origin. It is pided into two main types: imported particle board and domestic processed particle board. Particle boards are normally imported from many different countries such as Malaysia, Thailand...
